While previously equipment had to be taken off-site to be repaired, costing money and time – it no longer has to leave location thus eliminating costly downtime, minimising work interruptions, reducing transport costs and keeping sites operational. For larger equipment like cranes, a damaged crane rope often means that cranes have to be removed from site and sent away for repair, making the cranes unusable and putting businesses out of action. Now, the Bullivants Mobile Sales, Service and Repair Truck is capable of repairing crane ropes and end terminations on location. “When we interviewed and surveyed customers the most common claim made was they didn’t want to have their gear leave site for inspections and repairs, as they want the minimum downtime from production,” explains Kent. “This was key in developing the concept – we are always striving to deliver the best customer experience we can.” From construction […]

Australian Plant Proteins secures investment as global demand grows

Construction of Australia’s first major commercial plant protein extraction facility will commence this month after investment was finalised last week. Australian Plant Proteins (APP) will begin the $20m fit-out of its plant at Horsham in Victoria’s Wimmera region, with commercial production due to commence in the first quarter of 2020, after securing investment from Melbourne based Scalzo Foods. APP, formed by investment firm EAT Group in 2016, has developed a proprietary extraction process for pulses to create high-protein powders which can be used across a broad range of food and beverage categories. The company already operates a small production and R&D facility in Werribee in Melbourne’s west. Company director and co-founder Brendan McKeegan said the investment from Scalzo Foods provided both the capital and distribution capabilities to meet APP’s target of full commercial production in early 2020. “We welcome the investment from Scalzo Foods, which is a highly respected, family-owned and run food manufacturing business with operations in Australia and New Zealand,” Mr McKeegan said. “APP’s process yields an extract containing more than 85 per cent protein. This is far higher than many other alternative protein sources and, combined with favourable sensory and taste elements, has enabled APP to generate significant local and international demand for the product as a key ingredient for a range of foods and beverages including meat alternatives, protein bars and shakes, snack foods and non-dairy beverages. The Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) will be hosting an International Symposium focusing on the latest advances in corrosion science and corrosion engineering. CSIRO Australian National Outlook 2019

Australia’s future prosperity will require bold action on a number of fronts and a deliberate commitment to careful and considered long-term thinking. Author James Deverell, Director, CSIRO Futures Australia’s future prosperity is at risk unless we take bold action and commit to long-term thinking. This is the key message contained in the Australian National Outlook 2019 (ANO 2019), a report published today by CSIRO and its partners. The research used a scenario approach to model different visions of Australia in 2060. We contrasted two core scenarios: a base case called Slow Decline, and an Outlook Vision scenario which represents what Australia could achieve. These scenarios took account of 13 different national issues, as well as two global contexts relating to trade and action on climate change. We found there are profound differences in long-term outcomes between these two scenarios. In the Slow Decline scenario, Australia fails to adequately address identified challenges. CSIRO, Author provided The Outlook Vision scenario shows what could be possible if Australia meets identified challenges. CSIRO, Author provided Slow decline versus a new outlook Australia’s living standards – as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita – could be 36% higher in 2060 in the Outlook Vision, compared with Slow Decline. Renewables still setting strong pace in South Australia

The April shelving of a major solar thermal plant has done little to slow the pace of renewable energy projects being proposed in South Australia. Andrew Spence In the past three months, applications for almost 1.7 gigawatts of renewable energy generation across six projects have been assessed by the South Australian Government’s State Planning Commission. Of these, the 280MW Cultana Solar Farm – the first large scale project in billionaire industrialist Sanjeev Gupta’s plan to generate one gigawatt of dispatchable renewable energy in South Australia – was approved by State Planning Minister Stephan Knoll last month. The other five projects still awaiting ministerial consent include: RES Australia 176MW solar farm and 66MW battery storage facility near Murray Bridge; Neoen Australia(Crystal Brook Energy Park) 125MW windfarm, 150MW Solar Farm and 130MW lithium-ion battery near Crystal Brook; Energy Projects Solar (Bungama Solar) 280 MW solar PV and 140MW battery storage plant to integrate into the National Electricity Market through a 275 kV connection to ElectraNet’s Bungama Substation near Port Pirie; Energy Projects Solar staged development of a 500MW solar farm with 250MW storage near Robertstown, and; RES Australia (Twin Creek Wind Farm Project) 183MW wind and 50MW battery storage near Kapunda. Two other South Australian projects – the 95MW Tailem Bend Solar Project and stage one of the 220MW Bungala Solar Farm near Port Augusta started exporting power to the national grid earlier this year. There are also dozens of micro solar farms up to 5MW being constructed across the state. South Australia is home to Tesla’s 100MW/129MWh battery, which became the “world’s largest lithium-ion battery” when it was installed at Neoen’s Hornsdale Wind Farm in December 2017.
